Huzhou, known as the home of silk and land of rice and fish, was one of the many sources of ancient “Silk Road”. In 1995, archeologists unearthed pieces of silk of 5,000 years ago at the sit of Qianshangyang, which shows that the history of Huzhou people’s breading silkworm and weaving silk can be dated back to Neolithic age. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, silk had already been the material for common people’s clothes and the products of free trade. Silk was one of the most important products of foreign trade in the Han and Tang Dynasties. Changan, the capital city of Tang Dynasty, earned a name of “Silk City” and Tang Dynasty was thus called “Silk Country” at the time. There was also Silk Road in the South Regions. One departed from Changan and its surrounding cities to Burma and India. Another stared from the ports along the east coastal of our country, such as Penglai, Ningbo and Xuwen etc., and arrived at the islands and areas in the Pacific Ocean. When it was in Song and Yuan Dynasties, silk production and textiles industry came to its peak. Chinese ancient books recorded that our ancestors attaching equal importance to agriculture and breeding silkworms. There was a saying meaning that if Chinese women didn’t breed silkworms, people would suffer coldness. This saying fully demonstrated that ancient Chinese people really considered the silk industry important. Silk, as a symbol of nobility, was distinguished from cotton in old Chinese society. Governors and wealthy people took pride in wearing silk clothes. Thus, a Chinese phrase, which literally mans coming home in silk and metaphorically means being successful, came into being. Before Tang Dynasty, both silk and grain were articles of tributes. Silk always used as an article of reward by imperial court and local governments to officials and people of merits. Nowadays, people of Tibetan and Mongolian minority groups use silk hada to show their respect and congratulations in important occasions.
